Two Wolves Within
“Sometimes there comes a point to where rehashing painful events is no longer cathartic. In fact, it can prove damaging as it perpetuates the energy and thought patterns of that event.” — Penna
Many times we sit up and talk about the same old event over and over again. Perhaps, hoping that the situation would change. We go on and on and on and …. as if repeating it will somehow change it. Things happen as they do, and most of the times we are caught up in trying to figure the situation out. You know, put logic- or at least some reason to it.
But, the more you think about, talk about, feel about and dwell on something negative- the more energy you give to it. Whatever you focus most of your attention on, you give the most of your energy to.
What happens to something when you give it energy? It comes alive. Think about a lightbulb. A lightbulb is just an assembly of glass and wire with no life, right? But, give it energy, and it can light a room.
Well, if that’s the case, what do you think happens to that negative situation you’ve been talking about? When you dwell on negativity, you create negativity, you give negativity life. But, if you stay in a constant state of thinking about, talking about, and feeling about something positive, not only do you give it energy, but you create new life.
So, what is the difference between the creation of negative energy and positive energy? Negative energy is used for destruction. So, the only thing that is created from negative energy is more negativity. On the other hand, positive energy is used to create. So, if you focus on positive things, you are only creating things, people, and situations in life that will make you happy. Get it?
I will give to you the Law of Attraction. The Law of Attraction states that “Like attracts like”. Do you finally get it? What I’m saying is that you attract into your life what you are thinking about, feeling about, talking about. Whatever situation you are in right now, you attracted to you. What you think about is what you become. The only way to change your situation, is to not give any unwanted thing your attention. This includes people too.
Are you in a painful situation right now? Then change it by focusing your attention on only what makes you happy. When you are able to gain control of your negative destructive thinking, you will then be able to open your life up to a positive and constructive new world, with new creations. And then ultimately, a life of true fulfillment.
There is and old Native American sage who tells the story of “Two Wolves”:
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.
“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.” He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”
The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”
Here is the same story, but it is called “Grandfather Tells” which is also known as “The Wolves Within”:
An old Grandfather said to his grandson, who came to him with anger at a friend who had done him an injustice, “Let me tell you a story.
I too, at times, have felt a great hate for those that have taken so much, with no sorrow for what they do.
But hate wears you down, and does not hurt your enemy. It is like taking poison and wishing your enemy would die. I have struggled with these feelings many times.” He continued, “It is as if there are two wolves inside me. One is good and does no harm. He lives in harmony with all around him, and does not take offense when no offense was intended. He will only fight when it is right to do so, and in the right way.
But the other wolf, ah! He is full of anger. The littlest thing will set him into a fit of temper. He fights everyone, all the time, for no reason. He cannot think because his anger and hate are so great. It is helpless anger, for his anger will change nothing.
Sometimes, it is hard to live with these two wolves inside me, for both of them try to dominate my spirit.”
The boy looked intently into his Grandfather’s eyes and asked, “Which one wins, Grandfather?”
The Grandfather smiled and quietly said, “The one I feed.”
Which wolf will YOU feed this week?
